The George Floyd project
On May 2nd, 2017, George died of a heart attack at the age of 49. Almost exactly one year later, on May 2nd, 2018, his family and friends, who had been working on a project to create digital art works inspired by his work, celebrated his life by releasing the first of the George Floyd NFTs to the public.
The project was started by his friend and fellow artist Kristy DeLusiaux, a former colleague at the Gutenburg Academy of Fine Arts in Toronto, who wanted to create a way to honour her late friend. The first George Floyd NFT, entitled “Untitled (SpongeBob SquarePants)”, features the famous SpongeBob SquarePants character, drawn in the style of George’s work.
Why are NFTs such a good way to remember someone?
At his best, George was a master of the digital arts medium. He had been an artist all his life and worked as a commercial illustrator and graphic designer before his health took a turn for the worse. But while most people can remember where they were when they first encountered a certain work of art, it’s much harder for us to retain the details and nuances of certain paintings or drawings, or even specific media, such as the smell of a certain color or the sound of a certain note. That’s why digital art, which can be easily shared and downloaded, is such a great way to remember someone. You can leave a lasting impression on as many people as you want, without having to worry about hurting their feelings or breaking the law.
How to help out with the George Floyd project
If you’ve got any spare cash or are a professional artist, you can help out with the George Floyd project by donating original works of art, brushes and other materials. You can also share your works of art and donate to the cause by posting a link to the project on social media or by emailing the organizer with the details. If you’re not a professional artist or don’t have any extra money to throw away, there is a growing community of professional and amateur artists who are willing to donate their time, free of charge, to help spread the word and raise funds for the George Floyd project. A survey will soon be available on the Kickstarter website to help people find the right group of artists for them.
