Stellantis, a leading manufacturer and supplier of Lithium-ion batteries for the renewable energy sector, has announced a major expansion of its state-of-the-art production facility in Batavia. With an investment of $1.5 million, Stellantis is planning to build a battery plant that will double the size of its current site. This new Battery Plant will have an annual production capacity of 1 Gigawatt hours (GWh) per annum, making it one of the biggest lithium ion battery plants in the world. The new breeder reactor that Stellantis plans to build at its Batavia site will be able to produce batteries at much lower cost than current methods and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%. In addition to the Battery Plant, Stellantis is also expanding its existing recycling facility with a separate building dedicated to reusing manufacturing waste material from batteries. These investments are part of Stellantis’ strategy to become a global leader in the advanced manufacturing technology of Lithium-ion batteries by 2030.

What is Stellantis Battery Plant?
Stellantis Battery Plant will have a total of 6 GWh of manufacturing capacity. The Battery Plant will have the capacity to produce batteries with a specific energy storage of approximately 400 Wh per kilogram. The Battery Plant is expected to commence production in 2022. Stellantis has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Karunagaram and Valliava community to set up a battery manufacturing facility at their proposed location at Karunagaram. Stellantis has also entered into an agreement with Vedanta for the management of the ore mining activities at Varsha in Karnataka, India.

Stellantis Battery Plant will have a total of 6 GWh of manufacturing capacity
The primary focus of the expansion at Stellantis’ Batavia site is to build a 1 GWh capacity battery manufacturing facility. The expansion of the Battery Plant will add up to 6 GWh of manufacturing capacity. As per Stellantis, the expansion will help it in meeting the growing demand for renewable energy and supporting the country’s ambitious renewable energy target.

Stellantis Investment at Batavia Battery Plant
The Stellantis battery manufacturing facility will be built at the same site as the existing battery manufacturing facility. The total investment at the Batavia site is estimated to be $1.5 million and will be funded by the company’s existing cash reserves. The manufacturing facility is expected to be operational in 2020. A new independent breeder reactor will be built at the new battery plant with an annual capacity of 20 MWh. It will produce Lithium-6, which is critical to the manufacturing of advanced batteries like Li-ion battery. The lithium-6 can also be used to generate energy.

 

New Recycling Facility at Stellantis Battery Plant
The existing battery recycling facility will be expanded by adding a separate building dedicated to reusing manufacturing waste material from batteries. The expansion of the battery recycling facility is expected to increase the amount of waste material from batteries by 10 times. The facility will have a capacity to recycle 8,000 metric tonnes of waste material per year. The expansion of the battery recycling facility will give an impetus to the recycling movement in the country. This will help decongest the existing waste treatment and recycling infrastructure, resulting in a cleaner environment.

Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Shifting & Heaving Event at Shifting & Heaving Event
The Battery Plant expansion project was inaugurated during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Shifting & Heaving Event (SHE) at the Shifting & Heaving Event (SHE) at Batavia. The SHE, a part of the Battery Plant expansion project, will be used to shift and heave the earth around the Battery Plant. The Battery Plant expansion project is expected to add 10% to the operational efficiency of the Batavia site due to the newly implemented SHE. The Battery Plant expansion project will enable Stellantis to produce batteries at much lower cost than current methods.

Benefits of Stellantis Lithium-ion Batteries
The manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries like those produced by Stellantis uses high-grade lithium that is sourced from remote regions of the world. The lithium is mined in a low-oxygen environment and then processed to extract lithium-6. This is then used to make high-end batteries. The manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries also produces little to no greenhouse gas emissions and is more sustainable than fossil fuel power plants. Stellantis has partnered with SSE, the UK’s largest supplier of renewable energy, to provide off-grid energy for remote locations.
